HAT-TRICK FOYLE ALMOST STEALS IT!

YEAR 5  5       YEAR 6  7

11.06.03

A great second half comeback almost saw Year 5 snatch a draw. At half time they looked dead and buried, but they showed terrific spirit to draw level with only 5 minutes to go.

In fact Year 5 scored first. Jack Ellis, who proved a thorn in the Year 6 defence all afternoon, picked up the ball and ran at the opposing back four. As he entered the penalty area his acceleration drew a poorly timed tackle and he went tumbling to the ground. PENALTY. Jack got up to take the spot kick himself and made no mistake despite a brave effort from keeper Joseph Galvin.

Going one down seemed to inspire Year 6 and in moments they were level. Pressure forced an unlucky own goal. They then added a second and a third in quick succession. Samuel Leader finishing well on both occasions. At this point in the game Year 6 were clearly in the ascendancy and by half time they had made it 5-1. Toby Gibbs proved too strong in the six yard box for the surrounding defenders and cleverly lifted the ball over the keeper, and David Vago showed great determination from a corner and forced the ball over the line.

Mr Walker's half time talk must have been good because Year 5 certainly came out fighting. Matthew Powell was soon dominating midfield and James Foyle and Jack Ellis were proving a potent force up front. It was James who latched on to a through ball and finished well to get Year 5's second. Moments later a superb bit of work down the right by Matthew Powell ended with a teasing cross and James Foyle dived to convert an impressive header. 5-3.

Could Year 5 get back into the game? Jack Ellis thought so. Showing great speed he picked up a long clearance following a Year 6 corner and was soon one on one with the keeper. He kept his head and scored with a simple side foot. Unbelievably Year 5 completed the comeback when further pressure led a fifth goal. James Foyle was first to a bouncing ball in the Year 6 six yard box and he slotted the ball home for a fine hat-trick.

With 5 minutes to go could Year 5 hold on for the draw. For a while they looked the more likely to steal a win, but in the end two well taken goals by Gavin Taylor at the death gave the honours to Year 6.

What an entertaining encounter that was a credit to both sides.
