Text Box: 8.11.08 GRAVESHAM 1 ORPINGTON 2 G. Rahilly, A. Bass A wet and windy day greeted the players for this Kent Primary League encounter, and it was Gravesham who dominated from the start. The hosts adapted much the better to the muddy conditions and the Orpington defence were put under a lot of pressure. Gradually the Orpington players began to come to terms with the conditions, but in the 18th minute, Gravesham were awarded a penalty for handball. The Gravesham player struck the ball firmly towards the corner of the goal, but Louis Sharp dived full length to his right to push the ball away from the goal, and the defence completed the clearance. As the first half was drawing to a close, the Orpington forwards began to see more of the ball and had a couple of shots of their own. But, in the first minute of stoppage time, after more pressure from the lively Gravesham attackers, the ball was rifled into the corner of the goal to give Gravesham a 1-0 lead at half time. Gravesham continued to press in the second half, but 8 minutes into the half, George Rahilly collected the ball just inside the opposing penalty area, cut inside and fired the ball into net with his left foot. This goal raised noticeably Orpington’s confidence, and Sharp’s magnificent handling inspired Josh Singleton and William Rowlands at the heart of the defence, while George Clark, Archie Paterson and George Smith kept the Gravesham wide players at bay. With ten minutes to full time, the ball was played to Joe Yeadon on the left. He jinked inside and his superb diagonal defence-splitting pass rolled into the path of Alex Bass, who smashed the ball into the roof of the net from outside the penalty area. An heroic performance from Orpington’s defenders kept out Gravesham in the dying minutes as they sought a last-gasp equaliser. This was an excellent hard-working display against a strong, skilful side. Well done!
