Text Box: 18.10.08 MAIDSTONE 4 ORPINGTON 4 J. Toomey (3), S. Townsend A bright, sunny day and a smooth playing surface presented themselves for Orpington’s first match of the season. Right from the kick off, the two teams played with great skill, passing the ball with confidence and shooting in style. After about 8 minutes, the first goal for Orpington was steered in by James Toomey, following an excellent pass from George Clark. Twice, Alex Bass almost extended the lead with powerful shots from distance. For their part, the Maidstone forwards also had a couple of rasping shots just wide of the post. Then, with about 5 minutes before half time, Toomey doubled his tally, following up to tap in after the Maidstone keeper could only parry Steven Townsend’s smart drive. Two minutes later and the hosts pulled a goal back as they intercepted a goal kick. However, there was still time for Toomey to complete his hat trick as he capitalised on hesitancy in the Maidstone defence, following a corner. Early in the second half, Townsend charged down an attempted clearance and followed up to finish clinically in the corner from just outside the penalty area. This seemed to spur on Maidstone, who reduced the arrears by pressurising another goal kick. Despite Jack Sadgrove narrowly firing a shot just over the bar, and William Rowlands sweeping up well at the back, Maidstone completed their comeback with two goals in the final six minutes. Both sides had played extremely well and a draw was a fair result. It was most encouraging to see the early emergence of a good team spirit and some fine team play. This bodes well for the rest of the season. Well done lads!
